risen from the ashes... This sauna has “risen from the ashes” of the Angus Sauna and Der Faun. The layout appears to be much as its Angus incarnation even though it is now owned by the Phoenix Group. I would say that it is more inviting than their other sauna in Richard Wagner Str.
You enter via an arch into a rear yard. On paying at reception you go down to the basement via a spiral staircase which can be quite difficult for even those who are slightly disabled. The changing room leads to various darkrooms, cabins, sling and mini porn-movie room.
The passage then leads to a staircase up to the ground floor with a large bar area and a nice external terrace for smoking. There is a ladder from here to the roof of the premises for nude sunbathing. The wet area has two saunas and a steam room divided into several intimate areas. I believe there is a cold plunge but it was not working when I was there.
I visited on a Sunday afternoon, but even so the sauna was not over busy with perhaps 25 people over the afternoon. They were of mixed ages from twenties up to the sixties. The staff were very pleasant and the place was spotless.
The sauna is situated a few minutes walk from Rudolfplatz and it's U-Bahn connections to Lines 1,7,12 & 15.
Friendly, attitude-free daddy haven One of the smaller saunas in Cologne, you pay at the entrance (add 1€ each for a towel and slippers), then descend carefully down a narrow spiral metal stairs to basement level for the spacious changing room, lockers, sunbed as well as a cruising maze with cubicles of various sizes, a small porn cinema room, a sling room, an alcove with a large communal bed for the bolder guests etc. Back up on ground level (via a more conventional staircase) you'll find on your left the WC and then the lounge area and even a small inner patio where you can sit in the open air around a wooden table, weather permitting. On the Saturday I visited there were quite a few men there, mostly mature in their 40s, 50s and older with a sprinkling of more youthful 30somethings. It felt like a local hangout as many knew one another and there was lots of chatter and laughter about. As an outsider it will be up to you to overcome shyness and strike a conversation. Stating you are an "Auslander" usually does the trick and makes you interesting by default. On the right you'll find a small TV lounge, a moderately warm dry sauna and a hotter one, all lined up behind one long glass wall. At the end of this section there is the shower hall, a 4 head circular affair with the soap dispenser wall mounted on the side. Inconvenient but inhibits waste as you have to step away from the shower to take some soap. Clever. Next to the dispensers is the entrance to the (you guessed it - small) steam room. The Faun is generally clean, Kölners are a friendly lot, and they seem to be quite frisky. It's not that impressive compared with the much grander Babylon and Phoenix but it feels comfortable and just right for its target audience. Just do not expect young twinks here.
