"Aufguss"
This sauna is reasonably easy to find, as it is near U-bahn Station at Pilgramgasse, where there are many bus and tram intersections too. It has been recently remodelled and is very clean and well laid out. The only facility that it doesn't have is a Jacuzzi, although there is a spa bath if you have a massage.

On the ground floor are the changing areas, massage, the bar with drinks and snacks and the wet areas including Sauna and steam room. The shower area is right in front of the sauna, so you can see much displaying going on under the showers. There is also a row of comfortable cabins for sex on this floor. The downstairs has are various darkrooms, a sling, glory holes, Porno cinema and a maze. This basement area is where much of the sex is carried on.

The staff are very kind and helpful and in this sauna sandals are included in the price. There are various “specials” where two go in for the price of one etc. The clientele are of mixed ages ranging from an early 20’s up to 60’s & 70’s.

This sauna has a novel locker locking system, where electronic locks are fitted to each locker. Your locker “key” is numbered but you do not have to use the same numbered locker but can go to any locker. To close the locker initially, you close the door and just press the “key” against the lock then to open it you do the reverse.

There is also a strange ritual where the sauna cabin is emptied of people and the organiser of this “Aufguss” flicks water around the walls and on the stove usually with some scented essence. The participants then all rush into the sauna and close the door with the “Aufguss Notice” hung on the entrance. As the door-glass steams up everyone starts to have sex and this can carry on for about 20 minutes until they overheat and have to leave. Whilst the Notice is on the door, you are not allowed to enter on “pain of death”! I was not sure whether the prime reason was to show how macho Austrians are or just an excuse for an orgy – more likely the latter!

Perhaps I should mention that smoking takes place in the bar area as seems to be the case in the majority of saunas in Vienna. It appears that the 2009 legislation still allows smoking in cafes and restaurants, although it looks as though Austria may bring itself in line with the rest of Europe in 2018 in helping its citizens and their passive smoking companions to avoid the complications that smoking brings!
